Like most kids, Gary Llama grey up painting and drawing, but he didn't start making 'Art' until he learned to approach it from the intersection of Hardcore Punk and the elemental practice of Hip-Hop.
Once he found his approach to Art as a form of creative output, he began making paintings, and quickly moved into mixed media, photography, film, and sculpture.
Gary's work is informed by his work and writing as both an activist, and as an independent (and formal) student of the Social Sciences. His work is greatly influenced by the study of Symbolic Interaction, the historical Situationist movements, and his background in electrical engineering and music production.
In line with this ethic, and a focus on reclaiming art as a product of the working class, Gary has exhibited all of his work in either Cafe's or retail shops, hoping to connect with patrons of the establishments, to either cause a moment of refleciton, or if permitted, excite their imagination, both of which, Gary views as the purpose of Art.
Running parralel to his Art, is Gary's songwriting, of which Gary has been engaged in writing and releasing songs since the early 1990s. The products of both his Art and music intertwine and offer different perspectives on the same situations he comes across in life.
In 2020, he began doing a more formal production of works, centered around the work of the late American sculptor, Lee Bontecou, re-interpreting and building his own language around the elements he felt inspirational from her work.
Much of his work has been cataloged and released in publication, via his OVOLR! / DEBACKLE book imprint, with eight books of his works having been released.
Gary lives in his birthtown of Richmond, VA, with his kid.
